Fight Breakdown
Two-division world champion Davis overcame Mexican rival Santa Cruz last October in devastating fashion, knocking him out with a thunderous uppercut to retain his WBA lightweight crown and claim the same organisation’s super-featherweight title.
Although that victory was secured at the 130 pounds limit, the Baltimore-born star, guided by long-time trainer and mentor Calvin Ford, makes the massive jump up to 140 pounds to take on Barrios next.
‘Tank’ will enter the ring for his latest PPV clash having to deal with Barrios’ significant height and reach advantage, as the defending champion looks to benefit from his physical attributes in the biggest match-up of his own career.
Despite holding three-and-a-half inches in reach and four-and-a-half inches in height over Davis, the Texas-native often prefers to stay up close and fight on the inside and maintaining his style of fighting could prove costly.
Davis, being the shorter and more explosive puncher of the two undefeated fighters, will relish being able to work up close if Barrios opts to continue his typical approach and set up his vicious counters and body shots.
With both men entering with different division world titles in their possession and unbeaten records on the line, along with the substantial size disparity on show, Davis vs. Barrios is one of the most intriguing fights scheduled for the year.
Victory for Davis will see his ever-growing reputation and stature in the sport rocket even further; subsequently becoming a marquee name across three separate divisions in that successful scenario.
There will be no shortage of potential opponents throughout the super-featherweight, lightweight and light-welterweight divisions for ‘Tank’ if he can deal with the threat posed by Barrios and make history as a three-division world champion in Atlanta.
