SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHTS COLLIDING: WORLD BOXING SUPER SERIES.

It’s an exciting time for boxing to say the least. With the best super middleweights in the world about to clash together; a competition which leaves the winner unifying the division will soon be upon us.

We’re still slightly in the dark about it considering no venues have been announced. It is going to be televised in the U.S but no host has been confirmed. The eight-man single-elimination event will start setting fireworks off in September and October. It has been stated that the overall winner will be awarded the Muhammad Ali trophy, something many fighters consider a true privilege.

Jamie Cox World Boxing Super Series

Recently we have news of Jamie Cox [23-0] (13KOs) joining the tournament with no objections, he has literally quite said he will face anyone; he doesn’t care who. It’s a great chance for the unbeaten Swindonian as he looks for a chance to seize glory.

Erik Skoglund has put himself forward for the tournament putting his impressive 26-0 (12 KOs) record on the line. He will be coming down from light heavyweight to fight the best in the super middleweight division after successfully achieving wins for the WBA International, IBO world crown as well as securing himself as a #4 ranking for the IBF.

Juergen Braehmer is another light heavyweight coming down in weight in an attempt to steal the show. The former world champ hasn’t fought since his sudden stoppage loss to Nathan Cleverly. He now claims that he his prepared to box again and the weight issue is no problem. His impressive record of 48-3 (35 KOs) will see him as the veteran of the event and his experience could well pay off.

Also joining the group of eight is George Groves [26-3] (19KOs) who holds the WBA (Super) crown. Groves only recently picked up his world title in May after stopping Fedor Chudinov but is keen to put it on the line to unify the division, sadly we won’t see a rematch between Groves and DeGale just yet, but…

Fans will also be expecting to see Chris Eubank Jr who holds the IBO title but first has to get through Arthur Abraham on the 15th July. Many fans and critics have urged Eubank to participate to prove just how good he is. It’s unlikely to see him taking part with the timing of his defense and this event, but then again Eubank could surprise us all by putting himself forward.

Callum Smith and Anthony Direll will not clash together until the 9th September for the vacant WBC strap. Sadly, it does not look like either will be participating; with announcements and organising the tournament to be done within the next few weeks. It would be a great addition with the winner of this match putting themselves forward but it does not look likely.

Gilberto Ramirez holds the WBO title and is apparently pursuing a deal to fight his mandatory Jesse Hart in late September. The Mexican’s last two outstanding performances against Arthur Abraham and Max Bursak have put him as the world number one (Boxrec). Going against the best, Ramirez is currently the man to beat to come out on top. Do you think Ramirez should fight his mandatory and miss out on this immense contest? Let us know in the comments.

So far only George Groves, Jamie Cox, Erik Skoglund and Juergen Braehmer have been officially announced for super middleweight. We can all expect some more interesting additions to this tournament, the draft gala to determine the first round of fights will take place on 8th July in Monaco at the Grimaldi Forum.
